These procedures are for VFR arrivals and departures. In no case do these procedures exempt or take the place of ATC instructions or safety.

MMU has voluntary noise abatement procedures in effect due to noise sensitive areas. Prior to conducting pattern work, review appropriate procedures.

  Arrivals

All Runways  |  Aircraft Category HELI  |  Arrival & Departure

Arriving A/E, Rwy 05, C/B, or Rwy 31:
When able, maintain at or above 1,000 ft. MSL until within the Airport boundary.
Helicopters arriving or departing MMU east or westbound should acoid densely populated or residnetial areas by overflying Route 10, Route 287 or Route 24. If necessary to fly along Columbia Turnpike, remain as high as possible while avoiding the area south of the thoroughfare.
Pilots are asked to observe the following general procedures when possible:
- Avoid noise sensitive areas on departure and arrival
- Depart at the best rate of climb
- Use steep angle of approach upon arrival
- Avoid sharp maneuvers

Aircraft Weighing 12,500 lbs or less:
RWY 05 Arrival: Left traffic pattern

Aircraft Weighing More Than 12,500 lbs:
RWY 05 Arrival: Maintain 1,700 ft. MSL or higher as long as practical. Use minimum flap setting and delay extending landing gear until established on the final approach. Use thrust reduction techniques and minimize rapid RPM changes.

Aircraft Weighing 12,500 lbs or less:
RWY 23 Arrival: Left traffic pattern

Aircraft Weighing More Than 12,500 lbs:
RWY 23 Arrival: Route 80 Visual Approach. When approaching from the northwest, follow route 80 eastbound. When you see the highway junction of Rts. 46, 80, and 280, proceed to that point to turn final for Runway 23.
When approaching from the southwest, follow route 287 northbound. Follow 287 until turning base over route 80. Turn final for Runway 23 over the junction of Rts 46, 80, and 280.
Maintain 1,700 ft. MSL or higher as long as practical. Use minimum flap setting and delay extending landing gear until the final approach. Use thrust reduction techniques and minimize rapid RPM changes.




Runway 13  |  Aircraft Categories: A, B, C, D & E  |  Arrival Only

Aircraft Weighing 12,500 lbs or less:
RWY 13 Arrival: 3 mile straight in approach. Rwy 13 should be used only for operational necessity.

Aircraft Weighing More Than 12,500 lbs:
RWY 13 Arrival: NO turbojet arrivals, unless wind velocity exceeds 16 knots.

RWY 31 Arrival: Left traffic pattern. Noise sensitive community located off the departure end of Rwy 31

Aircraft Weighing More Than 12,500 lbs:
RWY 31 Arrival: Left traffic pattern. Maintain 1,700 ft. MSL or higher as long as practical. Use minimum flap setting and delay extending landing gear until established on the final approach. Use thrust reduction techniques and minimize rapid RPM changes.

  Departures

Departing A/E or Runway 05:
When able, fly runway heading until reaching 1,000 ft. MSL within the Airport boundary before proceeding on course.
Departing C/B or Runway 31:
When able, climb to 1,000 ft. MSL within the Airport boundary before proceeding on course.

RWY 05 Departure: Maintain runway heading to 1,700 ft. MSL, before proceeding on course.




Runway 23  |  Aircraft Categories: A, B, C, D & E  |  Departure Only

Aircraft Weighing 12,500 lbs or less:
RWY 23 Departure: Climb runway heading until reaching 1,200 ft. MSL before proceeding on course.

Aircraft Weighing More Than 12,500 lbs:
RWY 23 Departure: After reaching the airport boundary and reaching 500 ft., climb on heading 210 degrees to 1,700 ft. MSL before proceeding on course.

Aircraft Weighing 12,500 lbs or less:
RWY 13 Departure: Use Best Rate of climb (Vy) or Best Angle of Climb (Vx), or a combination thereof. Maintain runway heading until reaching 1,200 ft. MSL before proceeding on course.

Aircraft Weighing More Than 12,500 lbs:
RWY 13 Departure: After crossing airport boundary and reaching 500 ft. climb on heading 100 degrees to 1,700 ft. before proceeding on course.

Aircraft Weighing 12,500 lbs or less:
RWY 31 Departure: Use Best Rate of climb (Vy) or Best Angle of Climb (Vx), or a combination thereof. As soon as feasible, a climbing 10 degree left turn until reaching 1,200 ft. MSL before proceeding on course.

Aircraft Weighing More Than 12,500 lbs:
RWY 31 Departure: NO turbojet departures, unless wind velocity exceeds 16 knots. Climb 10 degree left turn until reaching 1,700 ft. MSL before proceeding on course.

Preferred Runway for pattern work is 5/23. Runway 13/31 should only be used for pattern work when the winds favor that runway.

  Engine Runup

Jet engine maintenance run-ups are limited to between the hours of 8:30am and 8:00pm. At any other time and only if a life threatening emergency situation exists, the run-up must be approved by the Airport Director or Deputy Director.
All jet engine maintenance run-ups must be coordinated through the Airport Operations office in accordance with the Airport Rules and Regulations. The Airport Operations office can be reached at (973) 538-3366 ext. 116.

  Flight Training

Voluntary noise restrictions in effect at MMU.

Runway 5/23 is the preferred Runway for pattern work.

Pattern work should only be conducted between 7:30am-10:00pm.

When conducting pattern work for Runway 23, keep the downwind leg between .5-.6 from the airport.

Noise sensitive areas exist around the airport.

  Community Groups/Info

  Stage I

Departure Only

All Stage I aircraft departing from Morristown Municipal Airport between the hours of 11:00pm and 6:45am will be subject to a $350.00 departure fee. This fee is implemented to reduce the impact of aircraft noise on the surrounding communities during night hours.

  Closed Traffic Operations

No closed traffic operations or practice instrument approaches on any runway between the hours of 10:00 pm and 7:30am.

No touch and go operations on Runway 13/31 unless the winds favor that runway.

No touch and go operations or low approaches for military, turboprop, or turbojet aircraft at anytime.

  Traffic Pattern Work at MMU

Noise sensitive areas exist around the Morristown Airport. When conducting pattern work please keep the downwind leg for Runway 23 within .5-.6 miles from the airport.

  AOPA Noise Awareness Steps

Following are some general guidelines and techniques to minimize the noise impact produced by aircraft operating near the ground.

1. If practical, avoid noise-sensitive areas such as residential areas, open-air assemblies (e.g. sporting events and concerts), and national park areas. Make every effort to fly at or above 2,000 feet over the surface of such areas when overflight cannot be avoided.

2. Consider using a reduced power setting if flight must be low because of cloud cover or overlying controlled airspace or when approaching the airport of destination. Propellers generate more noise than engines; flying with the lowest practical rpm setting will reduce the aircraft's noise level substantially.

3. Perform stalls, spins, and other practice maneuvers over uninhabited terrain.

4. Many airports have established specific noise abatement procedures. Familiarize yourself and comply with these procedures.

5. To contain aircraft noise within airport boundaries, avoid performing engine runups at the ends of runways near housing developments. Instead, select a location for engine runup closer to the center of the field.

6. On takeoff, gain altitude as quickly as possible without compromising safety. Begin takeoffs at the start of a runway, not at an intersection.

7. Retract the landing gear either as soon as a landing straight ahead on the runway can no longer be accomplished or as soon as the aircraft achieves a positive rate of climb. If practical, maintain best-angle-of-climb airspeed until reaching 50 feet or an altitude that provides clearance from terrain or obstacles. Then accelerate to best-rate-of-climb airspeed. If consistent with safety, make the first power reduction at 500 feet.

8. Fly a tight landing pattern to keep noise as close to the airport as possible. Practice descent to the runway at low power settings and with as few power changes as possible.

9. If a VASI or other visual approach guidance system is available, use it. These devices will indicate a safe glidepath and allow a smooth, quiet descent to the runway.

10. If possible, do not adjust the propeller control for flat pitch on the downwind leg; instead, wait until short final. This practice not only provides a quieter approach, but also reduces stress on the engine and propeller governor.

11. Avoid low-level, high-power approaches, which not only create high noise impacts, but also limit options in the event of engine failure.

12. Flying between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. should be avoided whenever possible. (Most aircraft noise complaints are registered by residents whose sleep has been disturbed by noisy, low-flying aircraft.)

Note: These recommendations are general in nature; some may not be advisable for every aircraft in every situation. No noise reduction procedure should be allowed to compromise safety.
